2027 Social Security COLA: How AI Can Help Seniors Understand Their Increase
By Willie Diggins | SeniorCitizens.AI
If you’re like many older Americans, Social Security is an important part of your monthly income. That means whenever we hear that Social Security benefits may be going up, one of the first questions that comes to mind is:
“How much more money will I actually get?”
That’s a good question, especially with the continued high cost of groceries, utilities, housing, healthcare, insurance, and prescription medications.
The good news is that Social Security recipients are expected to receive another Cost-of-Living Adjustment, better known as a COLA, in 2027.
But here’s something very important to understand: the official 2027 COLA has not been announced yet.
As I write this article in September 2026, The Senior Citizens League is projecting a 3.6% increase for 2027. AARP has made a similar projection of approximately 3.5%.
The official number will be determined after the final inflation figures are available and is expected to be announced in October.
So instead of guessing about the final number, I thought this would be a great opportunity to show you something else:
How can we use Artificial Intelligence to understand what a Social Security COLA could mean for our own finances?
That’s exactly the type of practical AI education I want to provide here at SeniorCitizens.AI.
First, What Is a Social Security COLA?
COLA stands for Cost-of-Living Adjustment.
Its purpose is to help Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits keep up with inflation.
When prices increase, the purchasing power of our money decreases. A gallon of milk that once cost $3 might cost $4. Your electric bill may increase. Insurance premiums can rise. Prescription drugs, property taxes, rent, and other expenses may also become more expensive.
The COLA is designed to help Social Security benefits adjust to those higher prices.
For 2026, Social Security beneficiaries received a 2.8% COLA.
For 2027, current projections suggest the increase could be higher.
Again, 3.6% is only a projection at this point—not the official 2027 COLA.
What Would a 3.6% COLA Mean for You?
This is where AI can make things easier.
Percentages can sometimes sound impressive until we turn them into actual dollars.
Let’s look at a few simple examples.
If you currently receive $1,500 per month, a 3.6% increase would be approximately:
$54 more per month
If you receive $2,000 per month, the increase would be approximately:
$72 more per month
If you receive $2,500 per month, the increase would be approximately:
$90 more per month
And if you receive $3,000 per month, the increase would be approximately:
$108 more per month
These are simple estimates and not official Social Security benefit calculations.
Your actual payment can be affected by several factors, including Medicare premiums and other deductions.
But this gives us a good example of how AI can help.
Ask AI to Calculate Your Estimated Increase
You don’t have to be good at percentages or pull out a calculator.
You can simply ask an AI tool like ChatGPT.
For example, type:
“My current Social Security benefit is $1,850 per month. If the 2027 COLA is 3.6%, approximately how much would my new monthly benefit be?”
AI can do the calculation and explain it to you in plain English.
You can take it another step and ask:
“How much additional money would that give me over an entire year?”
Now you’re beginning to use AI as a practical everyday assistant instead of simply asking it trivia questions.
Use AI to Help Plan Your 2027 Budget
This is where I think AI can become especially useful for older adults.
Suppose you’re receiving $2,000 per month from Social Security and the final COLA ends up close to the current projection.
Instead of simply spending the extra money, you could ask AI:
“Help me create a simple monthly budget for a retired person receiving Social Security. Show me how I could use an additional $72 per month for groceries, prescriptions, utilities, emergency savings, and entertainment.”
AI might help you divide that additional money among several expenses.
Maybe you decide:
$25 goes toward groceries.
$15 goes toward prescriptions.
$15 goes into emergency savings.
$10 helps with utilities.
And $7 goes toward something you enjoy.
AI isn’t making the decision for you.
It’s helping you look at your choices.
That’s an important difference.
Ask AI to Explain COLA in Simple Language
Government information can sometimes be difficult to understand.
There may be unfamiliar terms, percentages, charts, and calculations.
One of my favorite uses of AI is simply asking it to explain something in everyday language.
You could ask:
“Explain the Social Security COLA to me like I’m 70 years old and don’t know anything about economics.”
Or:
“Explain how the government calculates the Social Security COLA without using complicated financial terms.”
There’s nothing wrong with asking AI to simplify something.
That’s one of the reasons these tools can be so helpful for older adults.
A COLA Isn’t Really a Bonus
There’s another important point we should understand.
A Social Security COLA isn’t really a bonus.
The purpose is to help your benefits keep pace with inflation.
If your Social Security increases by $70 a month but your groceries, insurance, utilities, healthcare, and other expenses have also increased, you may not feel much richer.
That’s why I encourage seniors to look at the COLA as an opportunity to review their entire household budget.
Ask AI:
“My monthly expenses have increased over the past year. Help me compare my current expenses with a possible Social Security COLA and identify areas where I might save money.”
You might be surprised by the ideas it gives you.
Don’t Forget About Medicare
This is especially important.
Many Social Security recipients have their Medicare Part B premiums deducted directly from their Social Security payments.
That means an increase in your Social Security benefit doesn’t necessarily mean the entire increase will appear in your bank account.
Medicare costs can change from year to year.
Once the official 2027 Social Security COLA and Medicare premiums are announced, you could ask AI:
“My Social Security benefit will be $____ in 2027 and my Medicare premium will be $____. Help me estimate how much I might actually receive each month.”
That’s a much more useful calculation than simply looking at the COLA percentage.
Be Careful With Personal Information
I always want to remind my SeniorCitizens.AI readers about privacy.
You don’t need to give an AI program your Social Security number, Medicare number, bank account number, credit card information, passwords, or other sensitive information to calculate your COLA.
Simply provide the monthly benefit amount.
For example:
“I receive $2,100 per month. What would a 3.6% increase be?”
That’s all AI needs to perform the basic calculation.
Never give unnecessary personal or financial information to an AI chatbot.
Wait for the Official Announcement
The current 3.6% estimate is just that—an estimate.
Social Security calculates the COLA using the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, commonly called the CPI-W.
The calculation uses third-quarter inflation information covering July, August, and September.
Once those numbers are available, the official 2027 COLA can be determined.
That’s why I wouldn’t make major financial decisions based on today’s projection.
Instead, use it for planning.
When the official COLA is announced, we can come back, enter the real number into AI, and make much more accurate calculations.
AI Is About Making Information Easier
As a senior citizen myself, this is what excites me about Artificial Intelligence.
We don’t have to become computer programmers.
We don’t have to understand complicated formulas.
And we don’t have to become financial experts.
We can simply learn how to ask good questions.
Whether we’re trying to understand Social Security, compare grocery prices, plan a trip, prepare questions for a doctor, write a letter, learn something new, or organize a monthly budget, AI can help make information easier to understand.
That’s the mission behind SeniorCitizens.AI.
I believe older adults should have the opportunity to benefit from this technology just like everyone else.
Final Thoughts
If the current projections are close, Social Security recipients could receive a larger COLA in 2027 than they received in 2026.
But don’t focus only on the percentage.
Ask yourself:
What does that increase mean for me?
That’s where AI can help.
When the official 2027 COLA is announced, try entering your current monthly Social Security benefit into AI and asking it to calculate your estimated increase.
Then ask AI to help you think about how that additional money might fit into your monthly budget.
You may discover that Artificial Intelligence isn’t nearly as complicated as it sounds.
Sometimes it’s simply having a helpful tool available when you have a question.
And remember one of the things I always like to tell my fellow seniors:
You’re never too old to learn something new!
